Sé que es una posibilidad remota, pero ¿hay algún paquete o medio para insertar emoticonos en un documento LaTeX?

O puede usar imágenes (como se mencionó en otras respuestas).

Los "símbolos misceláneos" de Unicode incluyen 3 emoticonos simples: 0x2639-0x263B. Usted puede utilizar posiblemente 0x2686-0x2689 también.
Para más variación vas a necesitar usar imágenes e incluirlas de alguna manera.

Una solución es usar el paquete bclogo. Contiene dos emoticonos (happy & sad), además de muchos otros "logotipos" pequeños como banderas y otros.
