¿Cómo analizar una cadena que contiene XML en Java y recuperar el valor del nodo raíz?

Tengo XML en forma de cadena que contiene

<message>HELLO!</message>

¿Cómo puedo obtener la cadena "Hello!"from the XML? Debería ser ridículamente fácil, pero estoy perdido. El XML no está en un documento, es simplemente una cadena.

Uno de los estados de respuesta anteriores para convertir cadena XML a bytes que no es necesario. En su lugar, puede usar InputSource y suministrarlo con StringReader.

Hay que hacer la lectura XML correcta, o hacer lo dudoso solo para sobrevivir. Hacerlo bien sería usar el análisis de documentos adecuado.

O... dodgy usaría el análisis de texto personalizado con la respuesta de wisuzu o el uso de expresiones regulares con comparadores.

Creo que sería mirar String clase, hay varias maneras de hacerlo. ¿Qué pasa con substring(int,int) y indexOf(int) lastIndexOf(int)?
